About the design:

Blending elements of a novel and an art book, The Monument, designed by Studio Renate Boere, features full-bleed illustrations originally conceived as expansive, continuous drawings, some stretching across eight pages. By dividing these drawings and integrating them with the text, the reader experiences the illustrations as a parallel narrative, seamlessly woven into the story. The only unbroken illustration can be found on the cover, where the title and the queen are highlighted in orange—the symbolic color of the Dutch royal family.

The typography on the cover is carefully selected to reflect both the work and style of Ingrid Mol and the illustrator, Babette Waagevoort. The typeface, named “Juliana” in honor of Queen Juliana, subtly invokes her presence on every page—unseen yet always felt, much like her role in Mol’s narrative.
